Can you really use the Bible in evangelism? 

As you plan ahead for Christmas services, why not consider following up with a Bible-based series for those who want to know more? 

If we’re honest, as Christians we often struggle to read the Bible for ourselves, and so we certainly don’t think unbelievers would want to read it. Even if they did, we might not expect it to do them much good. 

But if we are ever tempted to think that the Bible is irrelevant or ineffective, the writer to the Hebrews corrects our thinking: “The word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). 

Because the word of God is alive and active, it’s the best way for people to discover the good news of Jesus as it’s where they can hear the voice of Jesus. 

So if you have access to a Bible, you have the best possible evangelistic resource available.

What is Christianity Explored?

Christianity Explored is a relaxed and informal way of sharing the best news you can ever hear and gives people space and time to think about the big questions of life. 

Over seven sessions in Mark’s Gospel, people find out all about the life of the person at the heart of the Christian faith – Jesus Christ. 

The structure of each session is simple: a short Bible study, a talk (you can give your own using our talk outlines or use our films) and a discussion based on the talk. You can use it one-to-one, or in larger groups, in your church or a local coffee shop - it’s as flexible as you are.

One Christianity Explored leader, Eva, explains how easy it is to run:

“I thought leading was for those who were articulate and very knowledgeable about the Bible. I’ve discovered, it is not about how I speak or about how much I know, but letting the Bible lead and encourage discussion.

Does Bible evangelism work? 

Cara's story:

“I didn't grow up in a Christian home. I was just going along in life doing what my friends and everyone else was, I never thought about Christianity. But in the first year of uni at Bristol I started to realise the things people said were fun weren't satisfying or fulfilling. 

“I started going to church with a Christian friend and they also took me to Christianity Explored, Bible studies in Mark’s gospel. I started to understand who Jesus was, and what he came to do. 

“A particular thing that stood out for me was said by a Roman centurion at Jesus's cross in Mark 15:39, 'Truly this man was the son of God'. It struck me because I started to realise that this was true and I believed it! I also realised that Jesus was the key to satisfaction, so I put my trust in him.”

Michael's story:

“I used to go to church more out of duty than anything else. I thought that being a Christian was all about being good. As I grew older I became less and less bothered by church, by God, and by faith.

“Everything changed when I went to University. It was there I met a friend who was a Christian. This led to an invite to church where I heard the gospel being preached for the first time, and was then invited along to a Christianity Explored course. It was there that I grasped two big things.

“The first of those things was that I understood my sin. learned that actually, I am sinful – that I am in rebellion against God and therefore facing his anger and punishment. The second thing I was convicted of was my need for Jesus. I truly grasped for the first time why Jesus had to die on the cross. He suffered and died in order to reconcile me to God, and this is brilliant news!”
