Lent Devotional in Philippians

1st March

Lent Devo's  Day 4   Metatag

"In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,

    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing

    by taking the very nature of a servant,

    being made in human likeness."

Philippians 2:5-7

“Because you’re worth it” was the advertising slogan that came to capture the self-fulfilment aspirations of the late 20th century.  “He made himself nothing” was never likely to have the same popular appeal.

It never ceases to amaze me how the Bible pulls together apparent opposites and makes sense of both. No one was worth more than Jesus. But in the strength of that knowledge, he took the nature of a servant and did what God the Father was calling him to do.

Remarkably the message of Philippians is that we are now “In Christ”. We’re clothed with the Holy Spirit, heirs of God himself. We’re worth so much that Jesus died on a cross in our place. The call, therefore, is that in the strength of that knowledge, we should have the same mindset as Jesus, take the nature of a servant and do what God is calling us to do.

Father God - thank you for the remarkable gift of your Holy Spirit, the deposit that guarantees our inheritance. Please equip us through that same Spirit, so that we can live out today the calling that you have granted us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
