Lent Devotional in Philippians

25th March

Lent Devo's Day 11 Metatag

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: rejoice!"
Philippians 4:4

There’s not been a huge amount to rejoice about over the past year. A global pandemic, lockdowns, being heavily restricted from seeing or even losing loved ones, not being able to gather as a church in the same way. The list could go on.

There might not be much to rejoice about, but what Paul tells us to rejoice in changes everything.

Paul tells us to rejoice in the Lord. Not a superficial happiness dependent on our circumstances, but a deep-rooted joy in the Lord.

Let me briefly remind you about this Lord in whom we are to rejoice:

He is the Christ (Philippians 1:1).

He is the one who will complete the work which he has begun in us (Philippians 1:6).

To live is all about him, and because of him, "to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21).

He is the one who is "in very nature God" (Philippians 2:6).

He "made himself nothing", and "humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross!" (Philippians 2:7-8)

He is now exalted in the highest place (Philippians 2:9).

At his name every knee will bow (Philippians 2:10).

There is "surpassing worth" in knowing him (Philippians 3:8).

Through faith in him, we can receive "the righteousness that comes from God" (Philippians 3:9).

He defeated death (Philippians 3:10-11).

Because of him, we can "win the prize for which God has called us heavenward" (Philippians 3:14).

He reigns in heaven (Philippians 3:20), and everything is under his control (Philippians 3:21).

He will "transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body" (Philippians 3:21).

Because of him, our names can be written in the "book of life" (Philippians 4:3).

This list could go on and on. Perhaps take just 15 minutes today to read through the whole of the book of Philippians. And soak in the wonderful truths about Jesus and let them cause you to rejoice.

Because, whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, Jesus gives us so much to rejoice in.

Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for who he is and what he has done for us. Thank you that, whatever our circumstances, we can rejoice in him. Help us to do just that. Amen.
